Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course

Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course at As Marine Shipping Management Pvt. Ltd.

The Electro Technical Officer (ETO) course prepares technically skilled candidates to maintain and troubleshoot all electrical, electronic, and control systems on modern merchant vessels. At As Marine Shipping Management Pvt. Ltd., ETO training combines advanced technical knowledge with practical shipboard simulations, ensuring graduates excel in the increasingly automated maritime industry where electrical failures can compromise entire voyages.

Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course

What Is Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course?

An Electro Technical Officer (ETO) is a specialized engineering officer responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical and electronic systems onboard ships – from main generators and high-voltage switchboards to radar, ECDIS navigation, and automated engine controls.

Introduced through STCW 2010 Manila Amendments, the ETO role addresses the growing complexity of shipboard electrical systems that now power propulsion, navigation, communication, refrigeration, and safety equipment. Unlike traditional marine engineers focused on mechanical systems, ETOs specialize in high-voltage electricity (440V+), power electronics, PLC automation, and sophisticated instrumentation critical to modern vessel operations.

Modules

Course Modules You Will Master

01.

Electrical Technology & High Voltage Systems

Electrical Technology & High Voltage Systems covers shipboard power generation (diesel generators, shaft generators), distribution networks, transformers, high-voltage safety protocols (above 1000V), and protective relay systems. You’ll master troubleshooting blackout scenarios and restoring essential services under time pressure.

02.

Electronic Systems & Navigation Equipment

Electronic Systems & Navigation Equipment focuses on marine radar, ARPA, ECDIS, GPS, gyro compasses, echo sounders, and satellite communication (GMDSS). Training includes fault diagnosis of transceiver circuits, antenna systems, and interface troubleshooting between bridge electronics and automation networks.

03.

Automation, Control & Instrumentation

Automation, Control & Instrumentation teaches PLC programming, SCADA systems, PID controllers, pneumatic/hydraulic actuators, and sensor calibration for engine monitoring, boiler controls, and cargo refrigeration. You’ll practice configuring alarm systems and overriding safety interlocks during simulated failures.

04.

Power Electronics & Electrical Drives

Power Electronics & Electrical Drives includes AC/DC converters (thyristor, IGBT), variable frequency drives (VFD) for thrusters/pumps, battery management (NiCad, Lithium), UPS systems, and inverter technology powering modern hybrid/electric propulsion vessels.

05.

Workshop Practice & Safety Training

Workshop Practice & Safety Training integrates STCW electrical safety, arc flash protection, confined space electrical work, and practical exercises with multimeters, oscilloscopes, insulation testers, and thermal imaging for preventive maintenance across engine room and deck machinery.
